On Producers Posted by Brett August 14, 2011 at 08:22 PM

What do you do when are in a rut and you feel like you can’t get out? You call a friend. You vent, telling them all about your problems – maybe they can offer a piece of advice or some reassuring words – or maybe they just listen. What do you do when you have some good songs and all of the skills and tools you need to see them to completion, but just can’t get it done? You get a producer. Problem - I am a producer. How do you produce a producer? In my case, you call a man who has nothing to do with the music business. Enter my friend Mike - We have known each other since we were kids, playing in our high school jazz band together. I always played behind the beat, with my noodling Phish guitar hero BS, while Mike was most undoubted in front of it like Jerry Lee Lewis on crack. Mike is probably the most type-A person I know…. And it’s not the drugs. We have been friends for a long time. He is also one of the most successful people I know. I greatly admire him for his commitment and determination to see any project to its completion. That’s why I tapped an ad-man to produce my record. Ever heard of him? Neither have I.
